Ever wanted to find out more about your local river?

Over the last 2 summers, armed with dipping nets and wellies, schoolchildren In the Barnard Castle are have been doing just that….with the RiverLAB workshops. Recording what they’ve found with the help of magnifiers, sampling trays, identification keys …and a great selection of art materials.

This summer series of RiverLAB, which has been running for 2 years now, is funded by the Heart of Teesdale (HOT) Landscape Partnership. The project has been designed to educate and nurture children’s’ interest in their local river, through a combination of scientific investigation and creative expression, and has been a big hit with the local primary schools…being delivered mostly to Y5/Y6s, along with a couple of Y3/4/5 classes.
After spending a whole morning at their local river site with Sara, the Trust’s Education Officer, the children go on to produce some amazing art-work back in the classroom, from their riverside observations.
